When does a threat become an Insider Threat?

Bailey Wong

When you feel threatened right?

Wrong. Just because you don't feel threatened, doesn't mean there isn't a threat around. The truth is, insider threats are becoming more common and happening more frequently than anyone would like to admit.

What do I mean by "insider threat"? A person, or persons, that have access and insider knowledge that allows them to impose danger on others by exploiting vulnerabilities within a system and/or organization.

There is no way to be completely safe and guarded from insider threats but, being aware of your surroundings and strange behavior gives you the advantage to react accordingly and minimize opportunity.

Where do insider threats happen?

Insider threats can happen anywhere, in all types of industries; especially in industries like transportation, health care, and government agencies. A good example of an insider threat is Germanwings Flight 9525.

So, why care? Because insider threats can be prevented

"If you see something, say something."

What motivates insider threats?

There are a lot of personal motivators that may trigger a threat, some examples are:

  • Greed and/or financial need
  • Feelings of anger or revenge (possibly due to a break up, bullying, getting fired)
  • Seeking an adrenaline rush and adventure
  • Self-Identity shifts
  • Vulnerable to blackmail

Again, "If you see something, say something!"

First, get as much detail as you can. Some good details to notice are:

  • How many people are involved
  • Color and style of clothing
  • Where and when the suspicious activity occurred
  • Why is their behavior suspicious

Of course any information is helpful, and should be reported to either, the local law enforcement, or your supervisor. Don't be shy in reporting any activity that you feel could be dangerous, because people around you who don't see anything are depending on you if you do.
